Outbreak Investigation of Mumps 
in SMPN 1 Kokap, Kulon Progo District 
Yogyakarta Province, 2010

Background: In 3rd December 2010, Surveillance staff of primary health care reported that ware increase in cases of parotitis/mumps (18 cases) who attacks SMPN 1 kokap students. The purpose of this investigation was to obtain information about diagnosis, sources and modes of transmission as the control and prevention actions.

Methods: A case-control study by interviews the students about the clinical symptoms and risk factors: direct contact, behavior: using shared eating/drinking utensils, washing hands, washing hands with soap, washing hands with soap before eating, closing the mouth/nose when sneezing/coughing, spit anywhere, adequate of sleep and nutritional status. Data analysis was conducted analytically to know the relation between two variables by cross tabulation to know the amount of Odd Ratio (OR).


Results: The results of the research showed that: from the 87 cases interviewed were found in clinical symptoms: swelling of salivary glands (parotid) 87 (100%), difficulty to open the mouth 75 (86.2%), malaise 69 (79.3%), the rear jaw of pain 69 (79.3%), fever 66 (75.9%), anorexia 64 (73.6%), headache 61 (70.1%), myalgia 49 (56.3%), ear pain 35 (40.2%) and orchitis 1 (1.1%). Fifty-three (60.92%) cases were male, age ≤ 15 years 81 (93.1%). 73 cases (83.9%) are students SMPN 1 Kokap, 7 (8.05%) Mujtahidin Ittihadul Boarding School students and 7 (8.05%) is a member of both. From the 76 cases and 152 controls, the results of cross tabulation analysis: using shared eating/drinking utensils OR=4.535 (95% CI: 2.391−8.602), direct contact OR=2.395 (95% CI: 1.089−5.268).

Action: Caring for and treating patients, dismiss students who are ill (4-5 day from onset), provides counseling and socialization of mumps prevention to students in SMPN 1 Kokap, held a joint review meeting as an effort to prevent and control mumps disease followed by all representatives of the school and boarding school in Kokap Sub-District.

Conclusion: There was mumps outbreak at SMPN 1 Kokap caused by the mumps virus during February 2nd 2010 until January 21th 2011, which is transmitted by using shared eating/drinking utensils and direct contact. Students who had mumps should be absence from school for five day to prevent spread to others and socialization of prevention.
